EDINT officially begins its journey to drive the digital transformation of municipalities
A national project: data in the service of cities and citizens
The EDINT – Data Spaces for Smart Urban Infrastructures project was officially presented at an event chaired by the Minister for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service, Óscar López, accompanied by representatives of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) and Red.es.
During the launch event, the minister highlighted that “EDINT is a strategic commitment to strengthen the role of municipalities and improve people’s lives”, underscoring the importance of data as a lever for sustainable development, territorial cohesion, and efficiency in public management.
EDINT is a pioneering project that promotes the ethical, secure, and shared use of urban data as a tool for social and economic transformation. Its goal is to create a national ecosystem for local innovation that drives interoperability, data governance, and public-private collaboration.
EDINT’s territorial rollout is being delivered through a network of 12 Centres of Excellence and Data Offices (CEODs) distributed across Spain. Some of them, such as A Coruña, Alcoi and Valencia, have already been inaugurated, while the remaining openings will take place during November and December. These are: Fuenlabrada, Jerez de la Frontera, Logroño, Madrid, Málaga, Mataró, Santander and the Provincial Councils of Badajoz and Jaén.
The CEODs will act as local innovation labs, promoting advanced management of urban data and generating applied knowledge to develop more sustainable, inclusive, and digital cities.
"The CEODs are an opportunity to modernise public management, promote innovation, and strengthen trust between the public and private sectors":
LUIS MARTÍNEZ-SICLUNA, SECRETARIO GENERAL DE LA FEMP
Collaboration and public innovation
During the presentation, local representatives agreed in highlighting the value of EDINT as a driver of cooperation between administrations, universities, and companies.
The Secretary General of the FEMP, Luis Martínez-Sicluna, highlighted that “the CEODs are an opportunity to modernise public management, promote innovation, and strengthen trust between the public and private sectors”.
With this official launch, EDINT marks the beginning of a new stage for the data economy in Spain, positioning local entities as leading players in digital transformation and smart urban development.
With an investment of nearly €13 million, the project already has the participation of 36 technology companies and entities, collaborating on defining use cases and on the practical application of the data economy in the territories.
